Blended Learning Lifeguard Course The primary purpose of the Red Cross Lifeguarding program is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to emergencies and to provide care for injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services personnel arrive and take over. The participant must also successfully complete the following: • Swim 300 yards of a combination of front crawl stroke with side breathing and breaststroke. • Tread water for 2 minutes using only their legs. • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Swim 20 yards using front crawl stroke or breaststroke, surface dive 10 feet, retrieve a 10 pound object, return to the surface, swim yards on back holding the object to the starting point and exit the water without using a ladder or steps. For certification, participants must attend ALL classes, pass all skills/scenarios, complete online class component, and Pass written tests with 80% or better.
